Southeast Leadout: Winter weather delays some road racing

New Carolina Cycling News writer James McCabe at 2010 Cross Nats!

Although the winter weather has sometimes had other plans, we are chomping at the bit for the start of the road season. We’ve been keeping watch over new developments with cycling teams, such as the Hincapie Development Cycling Team with new sponsor Holowesko Partners, and the latest eye-candy, like Craig Lewis’ Specialized Tarmac SL3. Although we’ve had an unusual winter, we’re still attracting cyclists, like Mountain biker Jeremiah Bishop, from colder climates for training here in the Upstate.

We are welcoming some new contributors to Carolina Cycling News. This week James McCabe gives us the lowdown on the first collegiate weekend of racing hosted at NC State. James is the Media Representative for the Atlantic Collegiate Cycling Conference, a student at Wake Forest University and President of the Wake Forest Cycling Team. Originally from New Jersey, James has brought many years of cycling knowledge to share with the team. He races mountain, cyclocross and road.

If you missed the first downtown Greenville Alley Cat or have been breathlessly waiting for the second, don’t miss it on Thursday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m. The race will start at the parking lot for Pedal Chic on N. Main Street. Keep up on the latest by joining the Facebook group and RSVPing for the Facebook event.

Lees-McCrae College continues to make the news with the January launch of its one-of-a-kind academic program in Bicycling Studies. Lees-McRae College has launched a search for student athletes with an interest in cycling. Lees-McRae College do not offer full scholarships, but provide full support to all team members when they travel thus off-setting individual student financial expenditures. The launch is bittersweet for Lees-McRae Cycling, as it comes on the heels of the devastating news of the untimely death of their standout rider Carla Swart. In honor her memory and countless accomplishments, Lees_McRae established the Carla Swart Memorial Scholarship which will be awarded to a female cyclist who demonstrates a love for the sport and exhibits great promise as a cyclist.

Road Bike Racing

The second race of the Winter Speedway Series hosted by Triangle Velo has been POSTPONED TO FEBRUARY 26 due to inclement weather in Rougemont, North Carolina. Results from the first race are available at the Triangle Velo Cycling Team website.

However, this Sunday in Burgaw, North Carolina is the first time trial of the year, Wilming-Tundra Time Trial. There are categories for aero and non-aero bikes so you don’t have to feel off the back because you don’t have a wind slicing rig. Online registration ends at 10:00 pm tonight.

The first “real” road race is the 12th – the Wolfpack Classic in Lee County, North Carolina. The course isn’t too tough so it’s a perfect way to ease into the season. Sunday the 13th is a collegiate race only in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Mountain Biking

The Charlotte mountain bike short track continues on Sundays at the Renaissance Park in North Carolina. The last two races will be double points so make sure to compete in the whole series. Giordana-Clif Bar-BRICA is currently in the lead of the team competition but many teams are hot on their heels. The results for the series are available at the Charlotte Mountain Bike website.
