Cyclocross

The Wednesday night cyclocross training series are picking up new riders – at least in Greenville. Last week there were 10 riders total. This past Wednesday there were 10 new to cyclocross riders in addition to 10 experienced riders. The key to the expansion is getting the word out that there are practice races available and that ’cross clinics are conducted beforehand to help lessen the learning curve of hopping barriers and navigating 180 degree turns.

Tuesday is Mock Oranges SECCA (Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art) series and it continues to start at 6:00pm.

Travelers Rest in South Carolina continues to hold practice cyclocross races with an “A” and “B” group starting at 6:00 and 6:35 respectively. And just like the prior weeks, there will be a skills clinic at 5:15 which also gives everyone a chance to pre-ride the course.

HCCX is hosting a women’s cyclocross clinic with pro racer Alison Powers October 16th. Space is limited so be sure to sign up early and tell your girlfriends. In the more immediate future Wednesday cyclocross practice races continue to be held at the Historic North Wilkesboro Speedway.

Clemson continues to hold training races on Wednesday. However information is sparse regarding this series, but if anyone out there can confirm that the race is being held, please drop us a note.

Saturday the 25th is the cyclocross race we’ve all been waiting for – Three Peaks. Modeled after Pennsylvania’s Iron Cross, Three Peaks is a cyclocross race that will challenge you physically with a race distance of 75 kilometers. There is also a 35 kilometer race in case your fitness isn’t quite there yet. Three Peaks qualifies as epic and finishing it will give you bragging rights all season long – and you can’t put a price on that.

Road Bike Racing

South Carolina holds their state championships this Saturday. You don’t need to be a resident of South Carolina to race so take advantage of the last road race of the season. Depending on what category entered, you might be able to make it to see the Hospital Systems Time Trial Championships held on the CU-ICARcampus. From the race course to time trial is about 30 minutes.

Wednesday the 22nd is the last opportunity to don your aero-helmet and zip up the shoe covers this year at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. It’s a 10-mile effort with an overall series winner.

Tours & Gran Fondos

Saturday the 17th is the Adam Little Memorial Ride to Benefit Habitat for Humanity. Adam Little was struck and killed while out riding and this ride benefits a cause that he believed in – Habitat for Humanity. There are two ride options: a 100 and 50 kilometer ride which are both sag supported. The $30 entry fee includes a lunch and ride t-shirt (guaranteed only to those who pre-registered by the 6th).

Before the pros roll out from downtown Greenville the Stars & stripes Challenge starts at 7:30AM. Cyclists will be allowed to ride the 22-mile US Pro course as many times as possible before the main event. In order to participate donate $70 with the proceeds going to P3 Ride. There’s still time to register and remember it’s for a great cause.
