ROAD
If you want to get your road racing fix head to North Carolina this Saturday the 14th for the Apex road race. The flyer describes the race course as rolling with a two mile flat run-in to the finish. Sounds like the strategy of the day is conserve your energy on the climbs and plan for a sprint finish.
For the time trialers out there the 14th is also the 321 Time Trial. This is the last time trial of the series and just like the previous editions it’s 12 miles in length with a couple of gentle rollers – looks ideal for full disc wheels.
Tuesday the 17th is the eighth race in the ACE Speedway Series. As always it’s held on the Altamahaw Race Track and there is an overall series champion – so don’t lose points by missing this race.
If you didn’t get your fill of racing at the speedway, the next day – Wednesday the 18th is the Ring of Fire criterium in Asheville. The course is a 500 meter slightly banked oval and guaranteed to be fast!
Don’t leave Asheville quite yet. Thursday is the final Riverside Drive time trial of the season. This 20 kilometer course is flat so it’s another opportunity to break out the disc wheel.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
The final in the Southern Classic Series is the 15th – the Dark Mountain XC Race. The race route is the Burn 24 Hour course. There is no late fee, but it’s always easier to pre-reg before so you have more time to focus on pre-race preparation.
TRIATHLON
August 14th is the Beach Bum Triathlon at Hilton Head, South Carolina. It’s a 500 meter swim, six-mile bike and three-mile run – a perfect event for the first timer or newbie triathlete.
TOURS AND GRAN FONDOS
Looking for a challenging ride? The Blue Ridge Brutal 100 is just what you’re looking for. There are 50-mile, 75-mile and 100-mile routes available. However only the 100-mile or 75-mile riders can ascend to the top of Mount Jefferson. Unfortunately due to Mount Jefferson State Park regulations, it is only being offered to twenty-five riders in the 100 or 75-mile ride on a first come basis.
CYCLOCROSS
The Cyclocross season is right around the corner so now is the time to dust off your cx rig and start practicing drills.
