The start at Stump Jump
Despite the 2010 race season having just begun, the South Carolina State Champions have already been decided. In what turned out to be a fantastic day of racing, Jenna Walker and the Spartanburg Parks and Recreation Department put on a seamless race at Croft Natural Area in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The 180 plus racers were treated to a well laid out course that yielded some extremely fast lap times, in what surprisingly turned out to be ideal conditions.
The Pro Men’s race turned into a three man slug fest from the gun. Scott Frederick (Inland Construction/Back to Dirt), Nathan Wyatt (Carolina Fatz), and Tim Mosher (Champion System-Cannondale) all broke away during the first lap and continued to push each other, and the pace, for the duration. Scott Frederick proved too tough though when he was able to pull away on the last lap with a narrow gap of just over 1:30, leaving Nathan and Tim to fight for the second podium spot. Nathan opened a gap of 15 seconds over the final lap, forcing Tim to third. Julia Tellman (Sycamore Cycles) was able to easily take home the honors of SC State Champ…as she raced alone in the Pro Women’s field with a time of 2:06:34.
